For CIA Part 1 students:study plan & Exam Stretegy..

Compiled Guidelines for GMSISuccess Students – CIA Part 1

How to do quality study of CIA Part 1 & pass in first attempt?

For CIA Part 1, if you understand these 3 points, you can clear it in 1st attempt. Syllabus is huge, but exam logic is same.

\---

3 Points to Pass CIA Part 1 in First Attempt

1. Don't Study CIA Part 1 as a Theory Subject – Study it as an INTERNAL AUDITOR'S MINDSET

CIA Part 1 is not about “What is COSO?” It is about:

“As an Internal Auditor, what will you do FIRST?”

Every question has 4 options that may look correct. IIA always asks for BEST, FIRST, MOST IMPORTANT, PRIMARY.

IIA Logic = Risk-Based + Standards-Based + Governance Logic

Example: Management accepts a high risk.

· Normal person says: “Accept it.”

· Internal Auditor says: “Evaluate the risk, ensure it is accepted at the right level, report to the Board/Audit Committee if needed, and monitor.”

Example: Independence is threatened.

· Internal Auditor: Disclose it, reassign the engagement, apply safeguards — never ignore it.

Example: Fraud is suspected.

· Internal Auditor: Assess fraud risk, preserve evidence, recommend investigation, notify appropriate parties — do not confront or investigate alone unless authorized and competent.

If you remember this order:

GOVERNANCE → RISK MANAGEMENT → CONTROL → ASSURANCE/CONSULTING → COMMUNICATE → MONITOR/FOLLOW-UP

you will solve many questions.

Also remember the IIA Code of Ethics:

Integrity, Objectivity, Confidentiality, Competency.

\---

2. Master ONLY 6 Domains by Weightage, Not by Page Number

Students waste time on low-weight areas. Pass/Fail is decided mainly by these:

· Domain V – Governance, Risk Management, and Control = 35%

· Domain III – Proficiency and Due Professional Care = 18%

· Domain II – Independence and Objectivity = 15%

· Domain I – Foundations of Internal Auditing = 15%

· Domain VI – Fraud Risks = 10%

· Domain IV – Quality Assurance and Improvement Program = 7%

So Domain V + III + II + I = 83% of the exam.

If you are strong in IIA Standards, Code of Ethics, Independence/Objectivity, Governance, ERM, COSO, Control Types, Fraud Risks, and QAIP, you will pass.

Don’t memorize. Understand flowcharts. Like:

Governance → Risk Appetite → Risk Management → Internal Controls → Internal Audit → Assurance/Consulting → Report → Follow-up.

\---

3. 100% Questions = Vocabulary + Elimination Technique

CIA fails students because of IIA vocabulary, not knowledge. They use same words repeatedly:

· Assurance vs Consulting

· Independence vs Objectivity

· Risk Appetite vs Risk Tolerance

· Inherent Risk vs Residual Risk

· Preventive, Detective, Corrective, Compensating Controls

· Governance vs Management

· CAE vs Audit Committee

· Proficiency vs Due Professional Care

· QAIP: Internal Assessment vs External Assessment

· Fraud vs Error, Red Flags

You MUST know the difference:

Risk Assessment vs Risk Analysis vs Risk Management

Assurance vs Consulting

Independence vs Objectivity

Technique to solve absurd MCQs:

· Read the last sentence of the question first.

· Eliminate 2 options which are clearly “Management / Operations” action, not “Internal Auditor” action.

· Between the last 2, choose the option which is more Independent, Risk-based, Documented, and IIA Standards-compliant.

Internal Auditor never OWNS risk, never DESIGNS controls, never IMPLEMENTS, never FIXES.

Auditor always REVIEWS, EVALUATES, RECOMMENDS, PROVIDES ASSURANCE, and MONITORS.

Study Planning (8–10 Weeks)

· Week 1–2: Code of Ethics + Domain I & II – Foundations, Independence, Objectivity

· Week 3–4: Domain III & IV – Proficiency, Due Care, QAIP

· Week 5–7: Domain V – Governance, Risk Management, Control (highest weight)

· Week 8: Domain VI – Fraud Risks + revise vocabulary

· Last 10 days: 1 Mock of 125 Qs in 2.5 hours + review wrong answers + IIA Standards

Daily: 2 hours theory + 1 hour Qs.

Weekly: 100–150 Qs.

Maintain an error log — why you got it wrong, which Standard/domain.

\---

Exam Strategy (125 Qs / 150 Minutes)

· Approx. 1.2 minutes per question.

· First pass: answer easy, flag doubtful, don’t spend more than 90 seconds.

· Read last sentence first; identify BEST / FIRST / MOST IMPORTANT / PRIMARY.

· Think: “What would a prudent Internal Auditor do per IIA Standards?”

· Eliminate non-auditor actions.

· Don’t overthink technical IT/management details. CIA Part 1 tests the IIA mindset.

· Mock score target: 75–80%+ consistently.

· Review every wrong answer: why wrong, which Standard/domain.

\---

Final Mantra:

Do this: IIA CIA Part 1 Q&A Database (at least 600 Qs) + 1 Mock of 125 Qs in 2.5 hours.

Review every wrong answer. No need for many books after that.

Feel free 🆓 to discuss with me if you have any questions ‼️

Sure, I will guide you. There is no cost of guidance.
